Proximate composition of mature Prosopis juliflora pods from Baringo County, Kenya

Abstract


The use of Prosopis juliflora mature pods in compounding Livestock feeds can stabilize prices, improve quality and ensure availability of Livestock feeds. A study was conducted at Tatton Agricultural Park, (Egerton University) to determine the proximate composition of milled mature pods of Prosopis juliflora (MMPP) from Marigat Sub County, Baringo County. The results of the chemical analysis are: Dry Matter (DM) 90.3%, Crude Fiber (CF) 17.7%, Crude Protein (CP) 11.4%, Ether Extract (EE) 2.8%, Ash 2.7%, Neutral Detergent Fiber (NDF) 25.3%, Acid Detergent Fiber (ADF) 15.4%, and total extractible phenolic (TEP) 80mg/g, Gross Energy (GE) 17.489 MJ/Kg, Metabolizable Energy (ME) 12.791 MJ/Kg, Calcium (Ca)  0.27%,  Phosphorus (P)   0.15%, Methionine (3.6 mg/g) and lysine (10 mg/g). It is concluded that MMPP could be in- cooperated in livestock diets as per the tolerant level of CF and TEP of individual livestock. Treatment is recommended to reduce the effects of high levels of CF and TEP. Also Livestock feeds with MMPP must have high quality CP preferably from animal origin, Ca and P to balance for the deficit to conform to the nutrient requirements of various Livestock.
